Bio of Dr. Billy E. Dickerson, Jr.

Dr. Billy Dickerson has been serving as senior pastor of Lakewood Baptist Church since February 1, 2007. Pastor Billy was born and raised in Greenville, SC. His parents, Bill Sr. & Judy still reside near Greenville.

He was saved at the age of 17. He describes this experience by saying, "Even though I went forward during a church service altar call at the age of 9, as I moved into my teenage years, I became increasingly troubled in my spirit that I was not genuinely saved. As I re-evaluated my experience at age 9, I recalled the preacher praying over me and then later being baptized, but I later came to realize that I had never truly turned away from my sins and received Jesus into my life by faith. Under heavy conviction by the Holy Spirit, at the age of 17, I knelt beside my bed and asked Jesus to become my Lord and Savior . . . and He did! Simultaneously, I began to sense God's calling upon my life to preach the gospel. A few days later, I remember reading Jeremiah chapter one for the first time in my life and God using this portion of His Word to confirm in my heart that He was indeed calling me to preach."

Dr. Dickerson attended Anderson College (Anderson, SC) his freshman year and afterwards transferred to Charleston Southern University (Charleston, SC) where he graduated with a B.A. in Religion in 1982. While going to college, he served for nearly 3 years as Youth Minister at Goose Creek First Baptist Church. It was also during these years that he met Donna Hamilton (from Easley, SC). He and Donna were married in August of 1979, and during Pastor Billy's senior year of college, God blessed them in October of 1980, with beautiful twin daughters, Sara and Rebecca.

Pastor and family moved to Cherryville, NC, for a one year "oasis" (Pastor Billy served on staff at First Baptist as Associate Pastor and Youth Minister) before moving to Memphis to attend seminary. They arrived in Memphis in 1982, and he eventually graduated with a Master of Divinity from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in 1985. In 1999, he received the Doctor of Ministry Degree from Southeastern Theological Seminary.

Prior to coming to Lakewood, Pastor Billy served as the Senior Pastor of Pine Summit Baptist Church, Pensacola, FL, and Center Grove Baptist Church in Clemmons, NC; earlier in his ministry, he also served for 10 years as the pastor of Kings Grove Baptist Church in Six Mile, SC (just outside of Clemson, SC). While serving in this church, Pastor Billy and Donna were blessed with another child, "Will" (born in 1998).

Pastor Billy enjoys his family, serving as pastor, preaching, reading, and when he has opportunity . . . golf!
